World Vision Backs Ministry of Environment’s Effort to Transform Children’s Behavior in Waste Management

Phnom Penh, October 11, 2023 – In a significant show of support, Mr. Leng Virak, Executive Director of World Vision, has endorsed the Ministry of Environment’s latest endeavor to instill environmentally conscious behaviors in Cambodia’s youth. The initiative aims to empower children and young adults to play an active role in reducing plastic waste in the country. Mr. Virak made this announcement during a meeting with H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, the Minister of Environment on the afternoon of October 11, 2023.

World Vision’s Executive Director emphasized the positive strides achieved through the collaboration between his organization and the Ministry of Environment. This partnership has delivered substantial results in reaching Cambodian communities, notably through the Community Protected Area project in Preah Vihear Province, which was established in 2001 and continues to operate with support from Australia. The project has not only enhanced the living standards of local inhabitants but has also contributed to tourism services in the area.

Expressing gratitude for World Vision’s significant contributions to environmental development, Minister Eang Sophalleth underlined the global magnitude of the waste problem. He stressed the necessity for collective efforts to reduce waste, especially plastic waste found in communities, households, schools, and places of worship. These sources of pollution have detrimental impacts not only on human health but also on the natural environment and biodiversity, both on land and in aquatic ecosystems. Simultaneously, a strong emphasis on effective waste management and distribution is paramount as part of a broader commitment to preserving biodiversity and realizing a cleaner, greener, and sustainable future.
